Study Note

'Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified' — the climax of Peter's Pentecost sermon declares the resurrection as God's royal enthronement of Jesus, a divine response to human rejection. The declaration 'God has made him Lord and Christ' does not imply that Jesus was not previously Lord and Christ but that the resurrection publicly installed him in the offices his person had always belonged to — an 'adoption' in terms of public declaration, not ontological change. The guilt-laden juxtaposition 'this Jesus whom you crucified' produces the 'cut to the heart' response of verse 37, demonstrating that genuine proclamation includes the naming of human complicity in the cross. The verse reflects the early kerygmatic pattern later analyzed by C. H. Dodd: historical facts about Jesus → interpretation through Scripture → declaration of exaltation → call to repentance.
