Study Note
The Preacher's exhortation 'Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might' is set within the context of the certainty of death and the brevity of life — a perspective that intensifies rather than diminishes the call to engaged living. The reasoning 'for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom' reflects the Old Testament's generally limited view of Sheol as a realm of diminished activity, not annihilation. The verse has been appropriated as a commendation of diligence, but its original force is more complex: it emerges from Qohelet's honest grappling with life's absurdity (hebel) and functions as a positive response to that absurdity. It anticipates the New Testament's theology of stewardship and the redeeming of time (Ephesians 5:16; Colossians 4:5).

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.
All that thy hand findeth to do, with thy power do, for there is no work, and device, and knowledge, and wisdom in Sheol whither thou art going.
Whatever comes to your hand to do with all your power, do it because there is no work, or thought, or knowledge, or wisdom in the place of the dead to which you are going.
