Study Note

The divine address 'Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah' applies the most damning OT label for moral corruption to Judah's own leadership and populace. The rhetorical strategy of renaming Jerusalem 'Sodom' is designed to provoke and destabilise — it strips away the assumed security of election and covenant membership by showing that the covenant can be violated from within just as thoroughly as it was by Sodom from without. Ezekiel 16:48-50's explicit comparison of Jerusalem's sins to Sodom's provides a later prophetic development of the same destabilising rhetoric. The verse invites every generation to ask whether religious communities that assume elect status are in fact enacting the values of those they most strongly condemn.
