Study Note

'The ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away' — the vision of the highway of holiness (Isaiah 35:8) concludes with this hymnic promise of eschatological homecoming. The vocabulary of 'ransom' (peduyey YHWH) identifies the returning exiles as those redeemed from slavery, echoing the Exodus typology that pervades Isaiah 40–55. Isaiah 35 is often read as a bridge between Proto-Isaiah and Deutero-Isaiah, sharing imagery and vocabulary with Isaiah 40:1–11 — both envision a miraculous return through a transformed desert. The phrase recurs almost verbatim in Isaiah 51:11, indicating its function as a refrain or liturgical response in the community of the restoration.
