Study Note

'They shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them' — the second Servant Song context (49:8–13) describes the restored exiles' return as a new Exodus: YHWH's personal guidance through a hostile wilderness. The protective imagery — no hunger, thirst, scorching wind, or sun — reverses the desert's natural hostility and echoes the pillar of cloud and manna traditions of Exodus 13–16. Revelation 7:16–17 quotes this verse almost verbatim in the description of the eschatological multitude before the throne — 'they shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore' — applying the Isaianic restoration to the final new creation. The verse demonstrates the pattern by which Deutero-Isaiah became the New Testament's principal resource for eschatological imagery: Israel's historical restoration becomes the type for the ultimate divine provision in the new Jerusalem.
