Study Note

The observation that 'the righteous perisheth and no man layeth it to heart; merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken from the evil to come' presents an early form of the theology that premature death of the righteous may be divine protection rather than divine abandonment. The phrase 'taken from the evil to come' (melifnei hara'ah) introduces a providential reading of early death that inverts common wisdom: the community's lack of mourning signals their failure to understand divine care. Wisdom of Solomon 4:10–15 develops this interpretation of premature death as translation from earthly danger, and it appears in Christian martyrology traditions where death before apostasy is presented as divine mercy. The verse has been used in Christian preaching to offer comfort at unexpected deaths and to challenge simple equations of long life with divine favor.
