The conclusion of Jeremiah's meditation on boasting — 'let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight' — is one of the most radical reorientations of human aspiration in the prophetic corpus. The three divine characteristics — steadfast love (chesed), justice (mishpat), and righteousness (tsedaqah) — are both what God is and what God does 'in the earth,' grounding the knowledge of God in observable historical and ethical patterns. Paul quotes this verse in 1 Corinthians 1:31 and 2 Corinthians 10:17 as the scriptural warrant for boasting only in the Lord rather than in human wisdom, might, or social standing. The verse has served as the Old Testament foundation for a distinctively relational and ethical theology of divine knowledge.
