Study Note

The Prologue's climactic statement — 'No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known' — addresses the Jewish tradition of divine hiddenness (Exodus 33:20; Isaiah 6:5) and presents the Incarnation as its resolution. The textual variant 'only begotten God' (monogenēs theos) versus 'only begotten Son' (monogenēs huios) is significant: the stronger reading 'God' is supported by the earliest manuscripts and makes an even higher Christological claim. The phrase 'at the Father's side' (eis ton kolpon, literally 'in the bosom') suggests eternal, intimate relationship — the same image used in Luke 16:23 for Lazarus resting in Abraham's bosom. The verse provides the theological basis for the entire Fourth Gospel: to see Jesus is to see the Father (John 14:9).
