Study Note
Jesus's promise that obedient love will result in the Father and Son coming to make their 'abode' (monē) with the believer picks up the temple theology of the Hebrew Bible: the divine presence that once dwelt in the Tabernacle and Temple now takes up residence in the individual believer. The term monē (dwelling place, abode) appears elsewhere in John only in verse 2 ('in my Father's house are many rooms'), creating a conceptual connection: the dwelling Jesus prepares and the indwelling of Father and Son are two dimensions of the same eschatological reality. This verse is foundational for Christian mystical theology, grounding the contemplative experience of divine presence in explicit dominical promise. Revelation 21:3 describes the eschatological fulfillment: 'the dwelling of God is with man.'
