'He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.' The stark binary — present possession of eternal life for the believer, present abiding of wrath for the unbeliever — makes this one of the New Testament's most decisive statements of salvation's urgency. The present tense 'hath' (echei) and 'abideth' (menei) both indicate present realities, not merely future outcomes: life and wrath are already operative before physical death. John 5:24 ('he that heareth my word... hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life') develops the same present-tense eschatology.
