Study Note

'This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever' — the conclusion of the Bread of Life discourse contrasts manna-eating ancestors who died physically with those who eat the living bread who never die spiritually. The contrast elevates Jesus above Moses and above the greatest provision of the exodus narrative, claiming a qualitative superiority in the gift he offers. The Eucharistic overtones of the discourse (most explicit in verses 53–56) have made this chapter central to debates about the Lord's Supper from the patristic period through the Reformation, with interpreters dividing over whether 'eating' is primarily sacramental or metaphorical for faith.
