Study Note

'And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward' — the closing verse of the Missionary Discourse extends the principle of reception from apostles (verse 40) to 'little ones' — the most socially marginal of Jesus's followers. The cup of cold water as the smallest measurable act of hospitality grounds the eschatological principle: no act of solidarity with the community of Christ is too small to receive divine attention. Matthew 25:31–46's 'least of these' theology develops this same logic into the most comprehensive judgment narrative in the Gospels, identifying Christ himself with the marginalized. The 'reward' language is characteristically Matthean and reflects a gracious reciprocity rather than a commercial transaction: the giver cannot lose what will be given back by the divine who notices even a cup of water.
