Study Note

When asked which commandment is greatest, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:5 — 'love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind' — and pairs it immediately with Leviticus 19:18 ('love your neighbor as yourself'). The addition of 'mind' (dianoia) to the Deuteronomy text may reflect the Greek translation or Jesus's own emphasis on cognitive engagement in love. By declaring that 'all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments' (verse 40), Jesus provides a hermeneutical key: the entire Torah is intelligible from the center of love. This double love command has profoundly shaped Christian ethics, serving as Augustine's hermeneutical principle and influencing modern covenant ethics.
