Abimelech

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Canaan · H0040G
Old Testament

Abimelech was a Philistine king who had dealings with both Abraham and Isaac, involving incidents where the patriarchs claimed their wives were their sisters.

Abimelech was a Philistine king of Gerar—likely a dynastic title rather than a single individual's name—who appears in two separate patriarchal narratives. In the first, Abraham presented Sarah as his sister; Abimelech took her but was warned by God in a dream not to touch her (Genesis 20). In a later episode, Isaac similarly passed off Rebekah as his sister, and Abimelech eventually discerned their true relationship (Genesis 26:1–16). Both accounts culminate in covenant agreements that acknowledge divine favor upon the patriarch. Abimelech's encounters illustrate the theological theme of God protecting the covenant line even amid moral ambiguity.
