Adriel married Saul's daughter Merab and had five sons.
Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite married Merab, the elder daughter of King Saul (1 Samuel 18:19; 2 Samuel 21:8). Their five sons were later handed over to the Gibeonites by David to satisfy the blood guilt incurred by Saul's massacre of the Gibeonites—an act of covenant justice carried out to end a three-year famine (2 Samuel 21:8–9). The execution of Saul's grandsons by the Gibeonites, and the subsequent mourning of their grandmother Rizpah, is one of the Old Testament's most poignant episodes. Adriel thus connects the house of Saul to the tragic consequences of covenant violation.
