Akan was the son of Ezer, a Horite chief who lived in the land of Seir.
Akan, also called Jaakan or Jakan in variant texts, was a son of Ezer, one of the Horite chiefs who inhabited the land of Seir before the descendants of Esau took possession of it (Genesis 36:27; 1 Chronicles 1:42). The Horites were the indigenous pre-Edomite population of the region southeast of the Dead Sea. The Bene-jaakan (children of Jaakan) later appear as a stopping point in Israel's wilderness journey (Numbers 33:31–32; Deuteronomy 10:6), suggesting that a place named after Akan or Jaakan was located in the Arabah region.
