Amorites

Early Patriarch · H0567
Old Testament

The Amorites were a Canaanite people group who lived in the hill country and were among the enemies the Israelites faced when entering the Promised Land.

The Amorites were one of the major pre-Israelite peoples of Canaan, descended from Canaan son of Ham according to the Table of Nations (Genesis 10:16). They occupied the hill country on both sides of the Jordan and are frequently named alongside other Canaanite peoples in the lists of nations Israel was commanded to displace. Their iniquity was said to be 'not yet complete' in Abraham's day (Genesis 15:16), explaining the delay before the conquest. Two Amorite kingdoms east of the Jordan—Sihon of Heshbon and Og of Bashan—were the first to be defeated by Israel under Moses (Numbers 21:21–35), marking the beginning of the conquest.
