Aphiah

United Kingdom Tribe of Benjamin · H0647
Old Testament

Aphiah, a Benjamite, was an ancestor of King Saul, the first king of Israel.

Aphiah was a Benjaminite and an ancestor of King Saul, listed in the genealogical notice of 1 Samuel 9:1 as the great-great-grandfather of Saul through Kish, Abiel, and Zeror. The genealogical depth provided for Saul—going back four generations—is unusual in the Samuel narrative and serves to establish Saul's legitimate tribal pedigree before his selection as king. The Benjaminite genealogy that culminates in Saul reflects the importance of ancestral lineage for royal legitimacy in ancient Israel. Aphiah himself is known only from this single genealogical reference.
