Aran

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Edom · H0765
Old Testament

Aran was a descendant of Seir the Horite, mentioned in the genealogies of Esau's family and the Horite clans.

Aran was a son of Dishan, one of the Horite chiefs of Seir, listed in the Table of Horite chiefs in Genesis 36:28 and 1 Chronicles 1:42. The Horites were the indigenous population of the region later called Edom, east and southeast of the Dead Sea, before they were displaced by the descendants of Esau (Deuteronomy 2:12, 22). Aran and his brother Uz represent the last generation of Horite chiefs listed in the genealogy. Beyond this brief mention, Aran plays no role in any narrative and is known entirely from the ethnographic lists of Genesis 36.
