Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, was given to Joseph as his wife by Pharaoh (Gen.41.45, 50; 46:20).

Asenath was the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (Heliopolis), given by Pharaoh to Joseph as his wife when Joseph was elevated to second-in-command of Egypt (Genesis 41:45, 50; 46:20). She bore Joseph two sons—Manasseh and Ephraim—who were later adopted by Jacob as full tribal ancestors of Israel (Genesis 48:1–20). The inclusion of an Egyptian priest's daughter as the mother of two Israelite tribes reflects the complex ethnic origins that Israel's tribal theology absorbed and sanctified. Jewish tradition, reflected in the apocryphal work 'Joseph and Aseneth,' developed elaborate accounts of her conversion to monotheistic faith.
