Old Testament

Barak, son of Abinoam, led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite forces under Deborah's leadership.

Barak was a military commander from the tribe of Naphtali who served alongside the prophetess Deborah during the deliverance of Israel from Canaanite oppression under Jabin and his commander Sisera. When God commanded him to muster troops and engage Sisera's nine hundred iron chariots, Barak agreed only on condition that Deborah accompany him, for which she declared that the honor of the victory would go to a woman rather than to him (Judges 4:8–9). He commanded the Israelite army that routed Sisera's forces when God threw them into confusion at the river Kishon. He is commended in the New Testament's 'hall of faith' (Hebrews 11:32) as an example of faith-driven military courage.
