Bath-shua

Old Testament

Bath-shua, a Canaanite woman, was Judah's wife and the mother of his first three sons.

Bath-shua (or 'the daughter of Shua') was a Canaanite woman whom Judah, son of Jacob, married during his time among the Canaanites (Genesis 38:2). She bore him three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. The union with a Canaanite raised issues of ethnic and covenantal boundaries that the patriarchal narratives address repeatedly. Her inclusion in the genealogy of Judah reflects the complex ethnic realities of the pre-Mosaic period, before the Israelite community developed more defined boundaries.
