Canaan

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H3667G
Old Testament

Canaan, the son of Ham, was the father of Sidon, Heth, and other Canaanite tribes.

Canaan was a son of Ham and grandson of Noah, listed as the father of Sidon, Heth, and the various Canaanite peoples (Genesis 9:18; 10:6, 15–19). He is the subject of Noah's curse following Ham's disrespectful treatment of his father: 'Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers' (Genesis 9:25). This curse narrative served in the biblical worldview to explain Israel's eventual possession of the land of Canaan and the subordination of the indigenous population, though scholars debate its historical and theological implications at length.
