Dinah

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H1783
Old Testament

Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, was raped by Shechem, leading to a violent confrontation between her brothers and the Shechemites.

Dinah was the only named daughter of Jacob, born to Leah (Genesis 30:21), whose assault by Shechem son of Hamor in Genesis 34 triggers one of the most disturbing narratives in Genesis. After Shechem 'seized her and lay with her and humiliated her' (Genesis 34:2), he desired to marry her. Her brothers Simeon and Levi orchestrated a revenge by tricking Shechem's family into circumcision, then killing all the men while they were incapacitated. Jacob reproached them for making him odious to the Canaanites, while Simeon and Levi responded: 'Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?' (Genesis 34:31). Dinah is a silent figure in the text—she speaks no words—and her story raises enduring questions about honor, agency, revenge, and justice in biblical narrative.
