New Testament

Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee and teacher of the law, was Paul's mentor and advised the Sanhedrin to be cautious in their treatment of the apostles.

Gamaliel was a leading Pharisee and teacher of the law who commanded great respect among the people, identified in Acts as the teacher of the young Saul of Tarsus (Acts 22:3). When the Sanhedrin was ready to kill the apostles for continuing to preach in the name of Jesus, Gamaliel counseled moderation: citing the failed movements of Theudas and Judas of Galilee, he argued that if this movement was of human origin it would fail, but if it was from God they could not stop it—and would risk fighting against God (Acts 5:34–39). His advice saved the apostles from execution. In Jewish tradition, Gamaliel the Elder (Rabban Gamliel I) is honored as one of the Tannaitic sages; his grandson Gamaliel II later led the Pharisaic academy at Yavneh.
