Heman

Tribe of Judah · H1968H
Old Testament

Heman was a grandson of Judah, mentioned in the genealogy of Judah.

Heman the Ezrahite was a man of renowned wisdom mentioned alongside Ethan in 1 Kings 4:31 as one whose wisdom Solomon surpassed. He is identified in the superscription of Psalm 88 as the author of that dark and plaintive psalm of suffering. A Levite named Heman, son of Joel and grandson of Samuel, served as David's royal seer and directed one of the three great musical guilds of the temple (1 Chronicles 6:33; 15:17; 25:1–6). Whether one or more individuals share this name remains a matter of scholarly debate, but the Levitical Heman's musical legacy was particularly significant for the development of Israel's worship tradition.
