Old Testament

Jeduthun, also known as Ethan, was a Levitical musician and singer during the reign of King David.

Jeduthun, also known as Ethan, was one of the three chief Levitical musicians appointed by King David to lead the temple choir alongside Asaph and Heman (1 Chronicles 16:41–42; 25:1–6). He and his sons served as 'the king's seer,' prophesying with lyres in thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. Several psalms bear the heading 'to Jeduthun' or 'according to Jeduthun' (Psalms 39, 62, 77), suggesting his family developed a distinctive musical tradition preserved in the Psalter. The expression 'sons of Jeduthun' continued as a designation for a guild of temple musicians into the post-exilic period (Nehemiah 11:17; 1 Chronicles 9:16).
