Old Testament

Queen Jezebel, the Phoenician wife of King Ahab, promoted Baal worship and persecuted the prophets of God.

Jezebel was a Phoenician princess from Sidon who married King Ahab of Israel and became one of the most notorious figures of the Old Testament. She aggressively promoted Baal and Asherah worship, massacring prophets of Yahweh (1 Kings 18:4) and importing 450 prophets of Baal. She orchestrated the judicial murder of Naboth to seize his vineyard for Ahab (1 Kings 21) and relentlessly persecuted Elijah, driving him into the wilderness. The prophet Jehu fulfilled Elijah's curse by having her thrown from a window; her body was eaten by dogs, so that only her skull, feet, and hands remained (2 Kings 9:30–37), exactly as Elijah had prophesied. In the New Testament, Revelation 2:20 uses 'Jezebel' as a symbolic name for a false prophetess who teaches sexual immorality and idol worship in the church at Thyatira.
