Old Testament

The ark of the covenant was placed on a rock in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.

Joshua son of Nun was the military leader who succeeded Moses and led the Israelite conquest and settlement of Canaan, described in the book bearing his name. Originally called Hoshea, Moses renamed him Yehoshua ('the Lord saves'), the Hebrew form of the name Jesus. He was one of two faithful spies—along with Caleb—who gave an optimistic report after scouting Canaan (Numbers 13–14), which is why he alone survived the wilderness generation to enter the land. Under his leadership, the walls of Jericho fell (Joshua 6), major Canaanite city-states were subdued, and the land was distributed among the twelve tribes. His farewell address in Joshua 24, culminating in 'as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,' is one of the most celebrated passages in the Old Testament.
