New Testament

Judas, also known as Barsabbas, was a prophet and respected leader in the Jerusalem church who accompanied Paul and Barnabas to Antioch.

Judas Iscariot was one of the Twelve Apostles and the one who betrayed Jesus to the chief priests for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14–16). He had served as treasurer of the disciples, and John's Gospel characterizes him as a thief who pilfered the money bag (John 12:6). After leading a detachment of soldiers and officials to the Garden of Gethsemane, he identified Jesus with a kiss (Mark 14:43–46). Overcome with remorse when he saw Jesus condemned, he returned the silver and hanged himself (Matthew 27:3–5); Acts 1:18 records his death differently, describing a fall and disembowelment. Matthias was chosen to replace him among the Twelve (Acts 1:26). His name has become synonymous with betrayal throughout Western culture.
