Kish was a Levite from the clan of Merari, whose descendants were assigned duties in the tabernacle service.
Kish son of Mahli was a Levite of the clan of Merari whose sons—along with Eleazar who had no sons—served before the ark during David's organization of the Levites (1 Chronicles 23:21–22). When Eleazar died without male heirs, his daughters married the sons of Kish their kinsman, preserving the family's service in the Levitical system. This Kish should be distinguished from the more famous Kish son of Abiel, the father of King Saul (1 Samuel 9:1). He appears only in the Levitical genealogical records.
