Kittim, a descendant of Japheth, son of Noah.
Kittim was a son of Javan and a descendant of Japheth through Noah, listed in the Table of Nations (Genesis 10:4; 1 Chronicles 1:7). His name came to denote the island of Cyprus in biblical geography, and more broadly the maritime peoples of the Aegean and Mediterranean. In the prophetic literature Kittim is associated with sea power: Numbers 24:24 predicts ships coming from Kittim, and Daniel 11:30 uses the term for Rome. The Dead Sea Scrolls frequently employ 'Kittim' as a cipher for the Roman empire.
