Old Testament

Micah, a Levite and son of Uzziel, served during the reign of King David.

Micah of Moresheth was a prophet from a village in the Judean Shephelah who ministered during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah in the late eighth century BCE (Micah 1:1). A contemporary of Isaiah, he combined social critique of exploitative officials and prophets with oracles of judgment and restoration. His prophecy that the temple mount would become a plowed field (Micah 3:12) was remembered a century later as having prompted Hezekiah's reform (Jeremiah 26:18–19). His most celebrated passage is the messianic prophecy that a ruler would come from Bethlehem Ephrathah (Micah 5:2), cited in Matthew 2:6 as fulfilled at Jesus's birth. His summary of the moral life—'to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God' (Micah 6:8)—is among the most quoted verses in the Hebrew prophets.
