Peleg

Patriarchs (Abraham–Joseph) Early Patriarch · H6389
Old Testament

Peleg, a descendant of Shem and ancestor of Abraham, during whose time the earth was divided.

Peleg was a son of Eber and a descendant of Shem, placing him in the ancestral line from Noah to Abraham (Genesis 10:25; 11:16–19; 1 Chronicles 1:19, 25). The biblical text notes that 'in his days the earth was divided,' which has been interpreted as a reference to either the dispersion of peoples (perhaps the Tower of Babel event) or a literal geographical division. His name (Hebrew: peleg) means 'division' or 'channel,' and his brother was Joktan, ancestor of the Arabian peoples. Luke includes him in the genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:35, KJV: Phalec).
