Old Testament

Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest, was known for his wickedness and died in battle against the Philistines along with his brother Hophni.

Phinehas was the grandson of Aaron and son of Eleazar who became famous for his zealous act during Israel's apostasy at Baal-peor. When an Israelite man brought a Midianite woman into the camp in open defiance of Moses's command during a plague, Phinehas followed them into the tent and drove a spear through both of them, stopping the plague that had already killed twenty-four thousand people (Numbers 25:6–13). God commended his 'zeal' and made with him 'a covenant of perpetual priesthood' for himself and his descendants. He later supervised the holy war against Midian (Numbers 31:6) and mediated the conflict over the altar built by the Transjordanian tribes (Joshua 22:13–20). Paul references the Baal-peor incident in 1 Corinthians 10:8 as a warning against sexual immorality.
