Study Note

The image of the blessed person as 'a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither' employs the ancient Near Eastern topos of the fertile tree for the prosperous righteous, contrasted with chaff in verse 4. The placement of Psalm 1 as the introduction to the entire Psalter suggests it functions as a hermeneutical guide: the Torah-meditating person is the ideal reader of the psalms that follow. The phrase 'planted by streams' (shatul al palgey mayim) evokes deliberate cultivation — the righteous are not accidentally prosperous but purposefully positioned through their relationship with Torah. Jeremiah 17:7–8 employs nearly identical tree-by-water imagery for the one who trusts in the LORD, suggesting a shared wisdom tradition about rootedness in the divine source of life.
