'Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help' — the Hallelujah psalm's antimonarchical warning immediately follows the call to praise God, establishing the contrast between the mortal prince (verse 4: 'his breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth') and the eternal God who executes justice for the oppressed. The verse belongs to the Psalter's consistent critique of political idolatry — the tendency to look to earthly power for the deliverances that only divine sovereignty can provide.
