Study Note
'Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer... be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life' — addressed to Smyrna, this is the most concentrated statement of the martyr's reward in the seven letters. The 'tribulation ten days' recalls Daniel 1:12's ten-day test, signaling a limited, divinely bounded suffering rather than open-ended torment. The 'crown of life' (stephanos zōēs) appears also in James 1:12, connecting endurance under trial with eschatological reward in a motif that shaped early Christian martyrdom theology from Polycarp of Smyrna onward.
