Study Note
The vision of the New Jerusalem having 'no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb' fulfills and supersedes the creation narrative's light structure: the primary light sources of Genesis 1:14-18 are rendered unnecessary by the divine presence itself. Isaiah 60:19-20 provides the prophetic precedent — 'the LORD will be your everlasting light' — which Revelation applies to the Lamb as the specific mediator of that light. The identification of the Lamb as the 'lamp' (lychnos) of the city echoes Revelation 1:20 and 2-3, where the lampstands represent the churches — the community of the Lamb's light in the present age is the anticipation of the final illumination. The verse grounds the beatific vision in the doctrine of the Lamb's co-equal glory with the Father as the permanent light source of the new creation.
