Study Note

The closing exclusion list — 'without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie' — mirrors Revelation 21:8 and forms the negative boundary of the New Jerusalem. 'Dogs' in the ancient world referred to social outcasts and in Philippians 3:2 Paul uses it for those who rely on external rites without genuine faith. The particular mention of 'whosoever loveth and maketh a lie' expands beyond discrete sinful acts to encompass settled character — loving falsehood over truth — echoing John 8:44 where Jesus identifies Satan as the father of lies.
