Study Note

The programmatic thesis of Romans — 'in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith' — opened the Reformation. Luther's breakthrough reading of 'the righteousness of God' as a gift given to faith rather than a demand judging sinners transformed his understanding of the gospel and, through him, Western Christianity. The citation of Habakkuk 2:4 as the interpretive key anchors Paul's theology of faith-righteousness in the prophetic tradition and shows it is not novel but the inner logic of the whole Old Testament witness. The phrase 'from faith to faith' (ek pisteos eis pistin) has been understood as faith's exclusive basis, as progressive deepening, or as the movement from OT to NT faith.
