Study Note
The promise that 'in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose' is among the most comforted and contested verses in Paul's letters. The subject of the Greek sentence is disputed: some manuscripts have God explicitly as subject; others read 'all things work together for good,' making creation the subject. 'Good' (agathon) in context is defined christologically by verses 29-30: conformity to the image of Christ, not necessarily material comfort or happiness. The verse's pastoral power derives from its refusal to exempt any circumstance ('all things') from divine purposive working, while its integrity requires holding to the specific definition of 'good' that Paul supplies.
