Altar

A raised structure for offering sacrifices to God, serving as a place of encounter between the divine and human. Noah built an altar after the flood (Genesis 8:20). Abraham built altars at Shechem (Genesis 12:7), Bethel (13:4), and Moriah (22:9). The tabernacle and temple had two altars: the bronze altar for burnt offerings and the golden altar for incense. Elijah's contest on Mount Carmel centered on an altar (1 Kings 18:30-39). In the New Testament, Jesus is both priest and offering. Hebrews 13:10 speaks of 'an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat,' pointing to Christ's superior sacrifice.
