Babylon
A symbol of human civilization organized in opposition to God, drawing from ancient Babylon's tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) and the empire that destroyed Jerusalem (2 Kings 25). Revelation 17-18 portrays 'Babylon the Great' as a wealthy prostitute riding the beast — representing the world's seductive economic and political systems. 'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!' (Revelation 18:2). God calls his people to 'come out of her' (18:4). Babylon contrasts with the New Jerusalem — the city of human pride versus the city of God. Historically identified with Rome, Babylon represents any culture or system that exalts itself against God's kingdom.
