Serpent

20 verses

A creature carrying complex symbolism from Genesis to Revelation. The serpent in Eden was 'more crafty than any of the wild animals' and deceived Eve (Genesis 3:1-5). Revelation 12:9 identifies the ancient serpent as Satan. Yet God used a bronze serpent for healing (Numbers 21:8-9), and Jesus compared his crucifixion to this event: 'Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up' (John 3:14). The serpent thus represents both the curse of sin and its remedy. Psalm 91:13 promises believers will 'tread on the lion and the cobra.' Genesis 3:15 prophesied that the woman's seed would crush the serpent's head.
