Paul's counsel to the wealthy recalibrates identity and security: the problem is not wealth itself but the pride and misplaced trust it generates. The phrase 'uncertain riches' (adelotēti ploutou — the uncertainty of wealth) is a remarkable description: money is inherently insecure by nature. Contrasted with the 'living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy,' the verse insists on genuine enjoyment of material goods — not asceticism — but grounded in the Giver rather than the gift. Jesus's Sermon on the Mount ('Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth') addresses the same attachment from a different angle.
