The eschatological climax — 'and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming' — presents the final opposition to God's purposes as destroyed not by military force but by the mere presence and word of Christ. The phrase 'breath of his mouth' (pneumati tou stomatos) echoes Isaiah 11:4 — 'he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth' — applying the Davidic warrior's word-weapon to the eschatological victory of Jesus. The 'appearance of his coming' (epiphaneia tes parousias) combines two technical terms: epiphaneia (the radiant appearing of a deity or ruler) and parousia (the royal presence or arrival) — the concentrated glory of Christ's return is itself the instrument of destruction. The verse models Revelation's eschatological warfare: the decisive weapon is the word from Christ's mouth (Revelation 19:15) rather than any earthly force.
