Paul and Barnabas's protest at Lystra — 'We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God' — represents the earliest recorded Pauline sermon to a Gentile audience with no Old Testament background. The appeal to natural theology (God 'left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons,' v. 17) parallels the Areopagus speech (Acts 17) and signals that Paul adapts his apologetic starting-point to his audience. The language 'living God' (theos zōn) is the Old Testament's characteristic contrast between YHWH and the dead idols (Deuteronomy 5:26; 1 Samuel 17:26), here deployed to Gentiles who had never heard the term. The episode illustrates the early mission's struggle to prevent the message of Jesus from being absorbed into existing Hellenistic religious categories.
