Daniel's threefold petition — hear, forgive, act — reaches its apex in the phrase 'defer not, for thine own sake,' grounding the appeal not in Israel's merit but in God's own name and honor. The prayer (Daniel 9:1–19) is widely recognized as one of the most complete intercessory confessions in the Hebrew Bible, modeled on the Deuteronomic covenant lawsuit. The phrase 'thy city and thy people are called by thy name' appeals to divine reputation as a motive for restoration — a rhetorical strategy found also in Ezekiel 36:22–23. The urgency of the petition reflects the exilic context: Daniel understands from Jeremiah that seventy years of desolation are near their end, making this a historically anchored prayer.
