Study Note

The command to worship only at 'the place which the LORD your God shall choose' is the founding principle of Deuteronomy's centralization theology, which restricted legitimate sacrifice to a single sanctuary. Historically, scholars identify this as a cornerstone of the Josianic reform (2 Kings 22-23), when the Jerusalem temple was established as the exclusive cult site and local high places were abolished. The theological rationale was anti-syncretism: multiplying altars made assimilation to Canaanite religion easier; centralization protected the exclusive covenant. The principle is reimagined in John 4:21-24, where Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that worship 'in spirit and truth' supersedes any specific geographic location.
